In which states is the CPA reciprocal to New York?

Ms. Lettuce asked:

I live in California but would like to live in New York. In which of those reciprocal states is the easiest and fastest to obtain? Is the CPA in CA hard? I’ve heard that in Maine you only need a bachelors. Is this true? I have a bachelors in Finance and took 2 accounting classes. I have no experience.

In order to become a licensed CPA you will need to pass the Uniform CPA exam, among other things. Having taken only two accounting classes there is no way that you will be able to pass the CPA exam. In addition to passing the CPA exam each state requires that you successfully complete a minimum number of accounting courses. The number of courses varies from state to state but you will have to take at least 6 three credit hour accounting courses and, in most states, as many as ten. If you really want to become a licensed CPA your first step is to enroll in a college and begin taking accounting courses – two semesters of Principles of Accounting, two semesters of Intermediate Accounting, two semesters of Cost Accounting, two semesters of Advanced Accounting, Auditing, Taxation….there is also a Business Law section to the CPA exam so you will also need to take two semesters of Business Law.
